Q&A with RIXO London Founders Henrietta Rix and Orlagh McCloskey

British brand RIXO London is the brainchild of two fashion buyers – and good friends – Henrietta Rix and Orlagh McCloskey that's taking the contemporary fashion world by storm. Known for bold ‘70s prints and high-quality fabrics, the colourful vintage-inspired pieces are a firm favourite at Fenwick Newcastle. We caught up with the fabulous RIXO's founders to find out more about the brand and what pieces should be in your wardrobe this season.

How did RIXO London come about?

We felt there was a gap in the market for an honest brand offering quality products different to anything else on the high street, all at a good price. We wanted to create clothes to fill the gaps in our wardrobe; what is missing, what are we wearing and where are we wearing it?

Tell us about the Rixo brand identity...

Vintage inspired, ultra-feminine shapes with a modern and contemporary twist. We want women to feel confident when they wear our pieces and know that each item is special. Our identity is our hand-painted prints – they’re  completely unique and no one else does them at the same price point and quality.

Describe the brand in three words?

Confident, fun, feminine.

What's the inspiration behind the print designs & what is the design process?

We gather inspiration for the collection from everywhere – whether it’s the printed lining of a vintage jacket, old botanical books, or the shapes and colours we see at flea markets, into a mood-board that guides us when we paint the print elements. It’s a very organic creative process that although time consuming, it is the part we enjoy the most, and makes the pieces so special. We then scan and clean up the prints on Photoshop and create CADs - where the collection really comes to life!

Do you have a style muse or is there a ‘RIXO London’ woman you have in mind when designing?

We don’t design with one women in mind as RIXO is such an accessible brand – from young professional women wearing it to work followed by drinks with friends, to women in their 70s loving the nostalgic shapes and prints! Obviously we love to see Kate Moss in our Moss blouse, but girls like Sienna Miller, Leandra Medine and the Olsen twins have such individual style that exude confidence, and that’s what we want a woman to feel like when she wears RIXO.

Describe the new AW17 collection and what are the standout pieces?

Our AW17 collection called ‘Shangai Chic’ is eastern oriental inspired using rich velvets, satins, silks and embroidery but with modern twists – such as kimono flared sleeves. The standout piece is our Cindy dress – a long wrap dress in hand-painted Oriental Sky print – and our new favourite shape is the Sadie blouse – a necktie blouse with straight sleeves that can be easily worn day or night. The Camellia dress in Red Oriental Jungle is also going to be a big hit!

Lots of celebrities & influencers have been spotted wearing your designs – do you have a favourite way a particular piece has been styled?

We love the way Pandora Sykes styles our spotty Moss blouse with jeans, a stripey blazer and hobo bag, it's causal enough for daytime but can be worn out too.  Humans of RIXO on our website is a small photo diary of girls styling the new RIXO collection with pieces in their wardrobe – we love the individuality!

How do you think vintage fashion influences designers today?

Fashion works in a big cycle – we think in order to find inspiration for future collections it’s imperative to look to the past and see how we can elevate it, designing according to the present day needs of customers. Fashion archives and the '60s and '70s are endless sources of inspiration for us - we believe it’s important to be aware of cultural decades that have shaped fashion industry today.

What RIXO London piece(s) should every woman own?

Every woman should own a necktie blouse – Moss or Sadie, a Camellia dress and a Georgia skirt. We don’t know what we had in our wardrobe before these additions!
