5 minutes with 'La Petite Anglaise' blogger Ella Catliff

Since launching her fashion, lifestyle and beauty blog 'La Petite Anglaise' in 2010, London-born Ella Catliff has taken the social media world by storm.

Ella is collaborating with Kate Spade New York at Fenwick of Bond Street, where she will host a shopping evening on Thursday 17 March from 6pm to 8pm giving styling tips and revealing her edit of the brand's latest collection. Ahead of the event, we asked the global phenomenon (and not to mention model) for her favourite trends of the season, what's on her shopping list and her top tips for anyone trying to stand out in the blogosphere...

How would you describe your personal style?

Preppy, playful, feminine, mood based, sometimes elegant, almost always brightly coloured. My favourite brands are Kate Spade New York (of course!), Valentino, Markus Lupfer, Chloe and Saint Laurent.

Any favourite looks, trends or designers from New York, Paris, London and Milan?

In light of the fashion month just passed, it’s interesting trying to pinpoint precise trends for AW16 because the shows across all four cities were so incredibly varied, especially with the addition of some brands showing runway to retail/SS16 collections! I thought Kate Spade was divine, obviously. It’s a fave every season but this time I felt more than ever like Deborah had literally designed my dream wardrobe! In New York I also loved Derek Lam. I didn’t see as many shows as I’d have liked to in London but from what I did, and the general consensus, it was a great season. For me, Peter Pilotto and Roksanda, were highlights. In Paris, Valentino delivered THE most beautiful collection possibly ever. I wasn’t in Milan but Gucci’s gloriously maximalist offering was a dream.

What do you love about Kate Spade New York?

There are SO many things I absolutely adore about the brand, but what I love most is its unashamed sense of playfulness and fun. The pieces are always beautifully made, but they’ve got a tongue in cheek edge to them I can’t get enough of. I mean, who doesn’t want a flower pot handbag complete with an embellished bee!?

How would you describe London fashion in 2016?

Eclectic, expressive, inspiring and hugely varied.

What’s on your must-buy list for the season?

I’ve got my eye out for bolder than bold florals, unusual shirting (think peplums, cut out shoulders, cropped hems etc), spring coats (essential when you live in London), gorgeously garish loafers and I am determined to finally treat myself to a pair of Valentino Rockstuds and matching bag. I’m all about co-ords and there are some great ones around this season whether you’re a print obsessive or more of a minimalist. Lightweight sweaters are perfect transitional pieces while we wait for spring to properly kick in.

What’s currently in your makeup bag?

YSL Beauty liquid eyeliner, bareMinerals powder foundation, a mini Sisley moisturiser, a variety of mascaras and bright n’ bold lipsticks galore! Probably some mangled old eye liners too - I’m useless at clearing out my makeup bag.

Finally, what advice would you give anyone trying to stand out in the blogosphere, particularly on Instagram?

Do what you love. If you’re not writing about brands, clothes and topics you are genuinely passionate about it will show. You’ll also potentially lose interest quite quickly as, however glam it may seem, blogging is hard work. It’s a highly saturated market - overnight success doesn’t happen. When you are essentially your “brand” and platforms such as Instagram are a huge part of your job, it will inevitably infiltrate most of your life, so go for it, persevere and most importantly make sure you’re actually enjoying it.
