The two words that can strike fear into even the most confident of fashion lovers? Dress code. But when choosing an outfit for a special occasion, whether it be Royal Ascot or your cousin’s wedding, there is only one mantra – be yourself.

If you don’t normally wear four-inch heels or frou-frou frocks then for heaven’s sake, don’t start now. In the past, strict dress codes often made you feel that you were having to dress in a uniform. Luckily, formal events these days are much less prescriptive, so you should choose an outfit that ticks all the right smart boxes and leaves you with plenty of re-wear options.

For me, this floral Mother of Pearl dress is a great example of something I would happily wear to Ascot and then all summer long. It’s a great midi length and has sleeves, which makes it flattering and versatile. It works just as well for work – teamed with flat sandals or luxe sneakers – as it does with heels. My maximum heel height rule is three inches – any more and I wobble.

This very pretty pink Mulberry bag really helps the outfit to pop. For me a bag is always an investment and never a one-season wonder, so I tend to avoid crazy shapes and patterns. But a strong colour from a great designer is always a keeper. And size does matter. For a big day out like the races it has to be practical enough to hold your gubbins, yet still be elegant.

Where you can go wild with events’ styling, however, is with accessories. High-profile occasions call for an oversized earring or a statement necklace. It gives you just enough “look at me” appeal as you saunter along, fizz in hand, to collect your winnings!
