Redevelopment News

What’s Happening . . . the facts

The store is currently undertaking a £30million refurbishment, due to be completed by Summer 2016. Once completed, W&G will expand its floor space by 50%. This exciting new shopping environment will be bright and airy with more natural daylight built around a large central atrium with up and down escalators to every floor. There will be a far wider choice of brands across Fashion, Accessories, Beauty, Home & Furnishings, a Handbag Courtyard and a Carluccio’s restaurant on the Second Floor. It will be simple to walk from the top floor of the NCP car park directly into the ground floor of the store and out to the High Street all at the same level.

What stage of the redevelopments are we at now . . .

The east building has now been developed and this new part of the store opened at the beginning of October 2015. The Tudor Building provides a temporary main entrance to the store while the old one is being refashioned. The old Menswear building, known for its lead Art Deco frontage, has now also been fully restored back to its former glory for all to see. As part of the redevelopment, this building includes a Handbag Courtyard, as well as a 1st floor café to replicate its previous history of the café being located in Jacklins. The store will remain open during the entire redevelopment period, stocking all your favourite brands and products.

Archaeologists from the Colchester Archaeological Trust have now left the site with the discovery of some Roman artefacts that have been of great historical importance. These are being put on public display at Colchester Museum at the end of March 2016.
