Exclusive Q&A with Earl of East

Introducing Earl of East candles, new to Bentalls Kingston.

To celebrate the launch of candle range Earl of East, we chatted to Niko from Earl of East to find out what his favourite scent was, where the inspiration comes from and what's next for the brand.

How did it all begin for Earl of East?

Earl of East started as our creative outlet almost 3 years ago. We decided to participate at our local market and sell a curated mix of vintage curiosities, cacti and artisanal-made items. What started as a one-off market quickly became a weekly habit where we built up a steady following and without realising, it became the perfect way to do market research for what our own line would look like. After a few months of trading we decided to go ahead and work on our range of soy-wax candles. After various perfume classes, candle-making workshops and a lot of trial and error we successfully launched our first three scents 9 months later. Throughout the development process we learnt that whenever you want to create or do something you just need to see the opportunity and go for it. A lot of people want to start something but don’t think they can; you learn along the way and every challenge makes you grow and develop.

Where does the inspiration for your scents come from?

All of our scents are inspired by travel and memory, which means that every scent has a different story. Greenhouse and Wildflower are inspired by childhood memories of our grandparents and are extremely personal to us, whereas Atlas Cedar, Smoke & Musk, Strand and Viagem are all inspired by travel. When it comes to our scents, we always try to recreate the smell that will trigger an emotion or a evoke a memory that will bring us and our customers back to that place and time.

What is your favourite scent from the range and why?

That’s a tough one – it’s like asking a parent to name their favourite child! In all honesty we like them all equally, but it depends on what mood we’re in, what the weather is like and what we’ve been making loads of lately.

In the morning, we love burning Greenhouse. This beautiful combination of tomato, basil and parsley seed is the perfect way to get the day started. Come lunchtime nothing beats powerful Wildflower, which is also a guest room favourite. Atlas Cedar is our ideal desk candle, as cedar wood is known to aid concentration. We love burning Viagem on lazy afternoons. Strand is the perfect fragrance for when friends come over and Smoke & Musk is spot on for movie nights.

Why are your candles different to the other candles that are available?

Our candles are made of eco-friendly soy wax and botanical fragrance and essential oils. This combination means a long burn time, good scent throw and an even burn, but what really makes our candles unique are our fragrances.

What’s next for Earl of East?

There is a lot going on at the moment, we are about to move into a new production facility. The building is so much bigger than our current space so we will be able to have a store, coffee and offer a bigger workshop programme in addition to having room to grow our production. In addition to this we’re currently working on a ceramic line, well-being products and kitchenware.
