Here at Fenwick, we're proud of our British heritage that began in Newcastle back in 1882 when the ambitious young shop assistant, John James Fenwick, began the Fenwick retail empire with our flagship store on  Northumberland Street.

Throughout our 135 years we've partnered with some of Britain's most respected heritage brands, as well as supporting the latest up and coming homegrown brands, we take real pride in supporting some of our nation's best thoroughbred brands that can be found on our shelves today.

There's no denying us Brits can get a tad patriotic, and who doesn't love the opportunity to dowse themselves proudly in red, white and blue? So to celebrate this momentously patriotic day, we've chosen five of our best British fashion, beauty and home brands to find out more about their British histories, and picked a few of our must-haves this season from each.

1. Barbour

Barbour's story began in 1894 in South Shields Market Place. Today the 5th generation family-owned business remains in the North East and although it sources products from around the globe, Barbour's classic wax jackets are still manufactured by hand in its Simonside factory.  Broadening from its countrywear roots, today the heritage brand produces clothing designed for a full lifestyle wardrobe, and remains true to its core values as a family business married with the unique values of the British Countryside.

The brand moved production to a 16-century Hertfordshire cottage in 1986 where it's bestselling blends carrying the  "London via the World" message are still made to this day.

Early inspiration was drawn from styles synonymous with English rural pursuits, giving the brand a rich British heritage. Growing in reputation as a quintessentially British fashion brand for over forty years, today Mulberry celebrates looking back to its archives and traditions, and re-examining them from a new modern perspective.

In 1996, Sophie was invited to demonstrate her skills at the Country Living Fair and made some of her illustrations into cards and limited edition prints, which proved a sell out. Sophie's brother Jem joined in 2007, supplying business acumen and drive to expand sourcing and sales of the Sophie Allport interiors range, which draws inspiration from the English countryside and its animals.
