What to wear on Valentine's Day

Whether its a romantic dinner date or a night out with the girls you have planned, Valentine's Day offers the perfect excuse to dress to impress.

Follow our style guide to find the best head-to-toe look for you when February 14th rolls around. From dresses and heels to perfume and lingerie, we've got you covered - and hopefully Cupid is paying attention...

The lingerie

Valentine's Day is all about feeling your best (and most beautiful), which starts with the basics.

Invest in some sultry-yet-comfortable lingerie this year, such as this gorgeous silk slip from La Perla or racy red bra and brief set from Mimi Holliday, and truly lounge in the lap of luxury - go on, you deserve it...

Look 1: Mod in Metallics

Looking to modernise your approach to the Day of Love? Opt for an outfit inspired by the popular metallic luxe trend. We're loving House of Holland's boxy crop top and high-waisted midi-length Tequila skirt, perfectly paired with to-die-for metallic Kurt Geiger courts and the Platinum bag of the moment from Bao Bao Issey Miyake.

Girls night sorted.

House of Holland top, £219, and skirt, £260; BaoBao Issey Miyake bag, £995; Kurt Geiger heels, £220; all available at Fenwick of Bond Street

Look 2: The new classic

If nothing feels quite right but red on Valentine's Day, mix up the classic red dress with a top and trouser look.

We love this clean-cut culotte jumpsuit from Tibi - chic and contemporary with an added waist tie, it was made to be worn out on the town with black sandals and a bright and bold handbag.

Tibi jumpsuit, £489; Jil Sander clutch, £345; Gianvito Rossi heels, £460; all available at Fenwick of Bond Street

The jewellery

We loved the emoji trend that emerged in 2015's fashion and accessories, particularly with the likes of Alison Lou, and Valentine's Day is the perfect opportunity to splurge on jewellery that gives a more subtle and wearable nod to the trend.

We have heart eyes for Alison Lou's gorgeous heart bangle and ring and the romantic arrow necklace from Bee Goddess, made with black diamonds - wearing Cupid's arrow can only bring you luck, right?

Bee Goddess black diamond arrow necklace, £1175, available at Fenwick of Bond Street; Alison Lou enamel heart bangle, £1845, and ring, £990; available at Fenwick of Bond Street

The makeup

Valentine’s Day makeup should enhance your natural beauty; its job is to make you look like you, just a more refined version. There’s no point rocking up for your date in a matte purple lippy if you’re not an accustomed lipstick-wearer - you’ll just end up feeling uncomfortable. Above all, have fun and embrace the process - it really is the perfect excuse to pamper yourself.

Coming up roses

Kick things off with a relaxing bath – we love REN’s Moroccan bath oil for its subtle rose scent, but also for its ability to leave limbs feeling silky soft. Follow with Estée Lauder’s new Modern Muse Eau De Rouge with its mix of rich roses, zesty fruits and seductive vanilla; it’s the perfect date-night fragrance.

Ace of base

For makeup, we recommend products that will give you that ‘lit from within’ look – Oskia’s Get Up & Glow booster has light-reflecting particles that energises, illuminates and preps the skin for your foundation of choice to follow. Blend in concealer where you need it and add a pop of colour to cheeks to give you a pretty, natural flush.

 All about the eyes

To avoid an awkward lipstick on your teeth – or over his face – situation, we suggest drawing attention to your eyes. Charlotte Tilbury’s fabulous eyeshadow quads range in colours and finishes, from matte to satin and full-on glitter. We adore this Dolce Vita palette for vampy look-at-me eyes. Finish with lashings of mascara, and if you find your mascara tends to transfer, the Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara has a trusty smear-resistant formula that works wonders.

Keep it simple

For lips, we advocate keeping it simple. Plump for a pink or browny-nude that enhances your natural lip colour, plus you won’t have to worry about the maintenance of reapplying after every course. The Tom Ford Lip Colours’ creamy formula won’t cling to dryness and its packaging looks awfully pretty in your bag of choice.
