“A culture fixated on female thinness is not an obsession about female beauty, but an obsession about female obedience. Dieting is the most potent political sedative in women’s history; a quietly mad population is a tractable one.” Naomi Wolf, The Beauty Myth.
The pressure to look a certain way, to be a certain size is a pressure every woman knows. From the moment we are born, we are told that we are not enough, that we must constantly be working to improve. To be thinner, to be prettier, to look younger, to perform. We become disconnected from a body that can give us so much pleasure, so much joy, if only we stop criticising it and choose instead to love it for what it is.
Join Emma-Louise Boynton (@emmalouiseboynton on Instagram), host and founder of the sell-out live event and podcast Sex Talks, and bestselling author, presenter, and body positivity advocate Megan Jayne Crabbe (@meganjaynecrabbe on Instagram), at Fenwick Kingston from 7pm for a special live recording of the Sex Talks podcast. Set in the beautifully designed Lingerie department, Emma-Louise and Megan will examine the enduring impact of the ‘beauty myth’; the myriad ways in which our relationship to our bodies affects our relationship to sex, confidence, work and so many other aspects of our lives; and how we can all cultivate a radically different relationship to our bodies.
Join us for an evening of engaging discussion as we contemplate a world where every body is celebrated for its unique beauty. After all, true beauty begins with self-acceptance.
