In the latest of our monthly series, we speak to Fenwick make-up artist and beauty personal shopper, Frey-ja Barker, about the best long-wearing formulas and her top tricks on how to make sure our make-up stays put from morning to night.
During the winter season, most of us wake up and get our faces ready in the morning and go straight out after work into the evening. With work, birthdays and Christmas parties currently happening in our busy schedules, the last thing we want to worry about is our [make-up](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up) slipping off our faces. To help you out, we speak to Fenwick’s resident make-up artist and beauty personal shopper, [Frey-ja Barker](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/services/service/?cid=319837da-586c-4b66-866b-9cd5b2af6878), about the best long-wearing formulas and her top tips for making sure your make-up lasts all-day.

To really ensure that your make-up stays in place, Frey-ja recommends taking some time to prep the skin before application, and in this installment, she shared her top tips on an effective winter skincare routine. “One of the best moisturisers for make-up is Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Cream,” she says. “It blurs imperfections and make-up really sits on top of it beautifully.”

In addition, remember to keep your hands from touching your face. Our fingers add excess sebum and oil onto the skin everytime we touch our make-up, so reach for a soothing setting spray instead.

Before we apply any make-up, we need to prep the face first with a primer, so what are your top picks?

FB: “Primers are extremely important as they act like glue and secure foundations in place. We often feel tired or sluggish in the morning and in turn, our skin appears sallow, so I would suggest applying Clarins’ SOS Primer over the face because it brightens the face with a pink pearlescent sheen. Boost radiance in dry or dull skin with Charlotte Tilbury’s Wonderglow, which illuminates with light-reflecting particles. For oily skin types, reach for Pinch of Colour’s Honeyglow Waterless Balm, which leaves the skin with a dewy glow."

###### **Next is [foundation](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/face/foundations), what are the best formulas that will last all day and night?** FB: “An absolute classic for long-lasting wear is [Estée Lauder’s Double Wear Stay in Place Foundation](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/face/foundations/double-wear-stay-in-place-foundation-spf10-30ml/2500000823503.html) – it gives you full coverage and is designed to last all-day. Another option is [Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Flawless Finish Foundation](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/face/foundations/airbrush-flawless-foundation/2530012614431.html), and this photographs beautifully against flash photography. Although it provides a heavier finish, it’s got a light texture so it feels comfortable on the skin. For those who want just a hint of coverage, reach for [Code8’s Radiant Beauty Balm](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/face/bb-creams/radiate-beauty-balm/2530012915606.html) – it’s hydrating and light in texture.” ###### **[Concealer](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/face/concealers) is a necessity in our beauty routines, so which are the best ones for brightening and concealing?** FB: “One of my favourites is [NARS’ Radiant Creamy Concealer](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/face/concealers/radiant-creamy-concealer/2530003526859.html) and it's great for soothing redness around the face. I use it under the eye to brighten the face. To conceal specific spots, use [NARS’ Soft Matte Complete Concealer](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/face/concealers/soft-matte-complete-concealer/2530003526354.html), or opt for [Laura Mercier’s Secret Camouflage](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/face/concealers/secret-camouflage/2500001066732.html), which has two shades – giving you the option to mix and match to your skin tone. ” ###### **What is the best way to set foundation and make sure it stays put?** FB: “Use a [finishing powder](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/face/finishing-powders) to ensure that everything stays in place! To help set and illuminate the skin, dust [Charlotte Tilbury’s Genius Magic Powder](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/face/finishing-powders/charlottes-genius-magic-powder/2530007033988.html) over the face – it’s a loose formulation that feels lightweight in texture. Pressed formulations provide more coverage and [Code8’s Matte Velour Powder](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/face/finishing-powders/matte-velour-powder/2530012915521.html) is great to use throughout the day to touch up the face. If you find that bits of your foundation have fallen out, simply pat the powder over your face to repair the make-up.”
###### **For eyes, how do we make sure our eyeshadow doesn’t slip and slide?** FB: “To make sure that your [eyeshadow](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/eyes/eyeshadows) stays put, always use an eyeshadow base before applying any make-up. Creamy formulations help secure powders in place, so apply [Tom Ford’s Cream Colour](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/eyes/eyeshadows/cream-colour-for-eyes/2500001139795.html) all over the lids to maximise the staying power of your eyeshadows. To add a pop of colour on top of the base, I recommend using [Bobbi Brown’s Sparkle Shadow in All Spice](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/eyes/eyeshadows/sparkle-eye-shadow/2500000720888.html) because it’s a shimmery powder that captures the light. Another option is [MAC’s Spellbinder Shadows](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/eyes/eyeshadows/spellbinder-shadow/2530012611546.html), which can be used dry or wet – simply use a damp brush to create a more intensive finish. If you’re looking for a palette, [Charlotte Tilbury’s Instant Eyes Palette V3](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/eyes/eyeshadows/instant-eyes-palette-v3/2530013009847.html) is sure to take you from day to night with a range of neutral browns and deep purple shades.” ###### **What are the best [eyeliners](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/eyes/eyeliners) and [mascaras](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/eyes/mascaras) to help combat watery winter eyes?** FB: “When it comes to eyeliner, the easiest option is to choose a waterproof formula and [Clarins’ Waterproof Eye Pencil](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/eyes/eyeliners/waterproof-eye-pencil/2530008631046.html) has a waxy formula, ensuring that it will not budge. For the lashes, [Eyeko’s Rock Out and Lash Out Mascara](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/eyes/mascaras/rock-out-and-lash-out-mascara/2500004894448.html) is a tubing formulation, so it’s designed to stay put and can be removed with hot water.” ###### **Let’s move on to the lips, what are your tips for choosing a long-lasting lip product?** FB: “For those who prefer wearing soft pinks and nude tones, choose a [lip gloss](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/lips/lip-gloss)! We tend to suffer from dryer lips during the winter, so I recommend [Clarins’ Instant Light Natural Perfector](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/lips/lip-balms/instant-light-natural-lip-perfector/2530008714466.html), which moisturises the lips and is flattering on all skin tones. Another soft shade is [Tom Ford’s Gloss Luxe Lip Gloss in Impulse](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/lips/lip-gloss/gloss-luxe-lip-gloss/2530012453856.html) – it complements a smokey eye with a pink tone. If you prefer wearing deeper shades, always use a [lip liner](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/lips/lip-liners) before applying any lipstick because it will help keep maintain the colour of the pigment throughout the day. One of my favourite long-lasting lipsticks is [Code8’s Matte Velour Lipstick in Operat](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/lips/lipsticks/matte-velour-lipstick/2530012915859.html) – it’s a classic matte red that feels comfortable on the lips.” ###### **What’s your top tip for making sure that our make-up stays on throughout the day?** FB: “My ultimate tip would be to mist your entire face with a [setting spray](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/face/setting-sprays). My pick would be [MAC’s Prep + Prime Fix Spray](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/face/setting-sprays/prep-prime-fix/2500000747137.html), which seals everything in place. There’s also a [travel-sized version](https://www.fenwick.co.uk/beauty/make-up/face/setting-sprays/mini-mac-prep-prime-fix/2530004777021.html) that you can bring around in a bag anytime you need a quick touch up.”
