Behind the scenes of one of the best selling cosmetic brands, legendary make-up artist François Nars works tirelessly curating products that maintain a cult-like status.
Graduating from Carita Make-up School in Paris, François moved to New York City to build his cosmetic empire. Founded in 1994, the eponymous brand NARS is renowned for its neutral tones with the occasional pop of colour offering opportunity to create any beauty look. Starting with a mere twelve lipsticks in Barneys New York, NARS has grown extensively in product range and popularity. François’ talents don’t stop there; after two years developing the brand, he implemented his first advertising campaign, by producing all the photography himself. François remains the Artistic Director for the company as well as its in-house photographer and copywriter. Alongside all this, he’s shot numerous editorials for major magazines and published five books on photography. He’s a man of many talents.
François’ philosophy is clear: beauty is more than an external statement - it’s a state of mind. Make-up is a tool to enhance and embellish, and, as François says, “the ultimate vehicle for personal expression.” François’ audacious mission to push the boundaries of beauty is evident in the naming of his products, paving the road for mischievous conventions across the cosmetic industry. Creating four seasonal collections year on year, we have seen new, innovative NARS products emerge in his expansive range and we’ve bear witness to some products that have stood the true test of time. So, let’s take a look at some NARS highlights.
