Layering packs the double punch of keeping you warm in the unpredictable autumn weather while also showing off your style chops. Check out our guide and top picks to work this trend into your own wardrobe this season.
Autumn is one of the most beautiful times of year, and it is also one of the most unpredictable. From crisp mornings to warm afternoons and cold evenings, it can be difficult to nail an outfit that can cope with the changing weather and still look stylish. That’s where layering comes in. Layering means you can build up an outfit that looks just as good altogether as it does when you take off an item or two (or three). It has the double impact of temperature control – keeping you warm or cool as needs be – while also showing off your sartorial chops. You can start with a t-shirt or shirt, layer a jumper and then a vest, then finish with a denim or leather jacket. Or start with a roll neck jumper worn beneath a blazer and, if weather demands it, finish with an overcoat. Wearing a t-shirt beneath a hoodie and topped with your favourite coat is a modern approach to layering that strikes the perfect smart/casual balance. Layering allows you to master your clothes and the way that you wear them. It’s up to you how classic or adventurous you want to be when it comes to coordinating or clashing colours, patterns and textures. Mithun Ramanandi, Fenwick’s Menswear Buying Manager, says: “When layering an outfit, I like to mix fabrics to make the outfit feel textured and interesting, and play off casual pieces with tailored items for a more contemporary look.” Check out some of our favourite pieces that we’ll be layering this season:
